Abstract
In support of the professional needs of geoanalysts and others involved in the development of geological and environmental reference materials, the International Association of Geoanalysts (IAG) has prepared this protocol to promote best practice in the certification of new geological reference materials. This follows on from the protocol already established for undertaking the successful Geo PT TM Proficiency Test Programe (IAG 2001), which is designed to assist laboratories in identifying unsuspected bias in their results based on the extent of between-laboratory agreement. There are some similarities between this present certification protocol and the established Geo PT TM scheme, for example in appropriate procedures for sample preparation. There are also differences, not the least the need to establish the traceability of reference material measurements, and to undertake a comprehensive assessment of uncertainty, both of which are integrated into the current protocol.
