Abstract
For a better understanding of major global tectonic structures like collision zones or rift zones and plumes, it is necessary to obtain a better image of deeper structures. The receiver function method, that means the interpretation of P-to-S converted Teleseismic waves underneath seismic stations, has proven to be very useful for that purpose. A brief historical review and a description of the processing steps of the receiver function method are given. Applications are demonstrated to the deep structure of the collision zones and high plateaus of Tibet, the mantle structure underneath the Hawaii plume and the main features of the crustal structure across the Trans European Suture Zone.
