Abstract

The “Mallik Data and Information System” facilitated acquisition, integration and dissemination of interdisciplinary data and provided a secure, accessible archive of quality controlled scientific results during the Mallik Gas Hydrate Research Well Program. Three main components comprise the system: (1) A specifically created Mallik Drilling Information System (Mallik-DIS) used for the on-site data acquisition, including a digital scanner, which produced a catalogue of digital core images; (2) the data warehouse, a powerful database and archive providing access to project data sets to members of the Mallik science teams via Internet; (3) the Web portal of the ICDP Information Network (http://www.icdp-online.de) allowing for retrieval, visualization and integration of the separate data sets. In the future we intend to integrate the results of this project work into a centre of excellence in data and information management in geological sciences (http://www.cegim.de).
