Zusammenfassung
How fast can volcanoes grow and what is the importance of volcano-tectonic interaction? Using three European satellites we generated an InSAR time series to investigate the spatio-temporal characteristics of volcano deformation in the Plate Boundary Observatory Chile. At the Lazufre volcanic complex, central Andes, two scales of uplift initiating during the observation time were observed: (1) a large-scale uplift showing an increase of the mean deformation rate and now affecting several eruptive centres, covering an area larger than 1800 km² and (2) a small-scale uplift located at the Lastarria volcano, which is the only volcano showing strong fumarolic activity in decades, with most of the clear deformation apparently not observed before 2000. Both the large and small uplift signals can be explained by magmatic and/or hydrothermal sources located at about 12-14 km and <1 km depth, respectively. Our research tests a possible relationship between these two volcanoes, tectonism and earthquakes.
