Zusammenfassung
In cooperation with Central Asian specialists, scientists at the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam are developing a regional hydrometeorological and geodetic Earth observation network to monitor parameters of the water cycle in Central Asia. The activities are part of the CAWa project (www.cawa-project.net), which is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office within the framework of the so-called „Berlin Process”. The decline in systematic observations in mountainous Central Asian headwaters poses a great challenge both to water management and climate and hydrological research. By the end of 2011, the project partners had installed five automatic low-maintenance multi-parameter stations which collect hydrometeorological data as well as GPS and seismic data. The satellite-transferred data of the new stations have high-resolution in time and are transmitted close to real-time. The data will be used for weather and runoff forecasting as well as for scientific questions such as the assessment of climate change and the monitoring of high-altitude glaciers. In addition, scientists at GFZ will use the ground-based station data for the validation and calibration of new remote sensing technologies within the frame of the CryoSat, EnMAP, and GRACE satellite missions.
