 Zusammenfassung: This study investigates the cloud properties of hot towers (HTs) during slow intensification (SI) and rapid intensification (RI) of tropical cyclones (TCs) in the Western North Pacific. The wide abundance of deep convective clouds (DCCs) during RI is investigated by examining the cloud microphysical properties of the HTs nested in DCCs. In a matured HT, the vertical profiles of liquid water content (LWC) and ice water content (IWC) reveal that condensates [1] mostly form at upper levels; and [2] have strong correlations with vertical velocity. Higher concentration of cloud ice in the HTs of rapidly intensifying TCs as compared with that in slowly intensifying TCs is found and may be used to delineate the onset of RI from SI.
