Zusammenfassung: The recent volcanic activity in the island of La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain) lasted during 85 days between September and December 2021 and ejected more than 200 million cubic meters of lava flows and 10 million cubic meters of tephra. This very recent volcanic activity allows specific studies to be carried out aiming to better understand how rocks become magnetised during cooling and to investigate to what extent they accurately record both geomagnetic field intensity and direction. With this aim in mind, we sampled a 2.20 m thick basaltic lava flow formed during an eruption in December 2021, and recently made accessible thanks to a new road built across the volcanic material. Samples were taken every few centimetres across the whole flow such that a total of 28 oriented samples could be obtained. In addition, some samples cooled down in the ocean were also taken. Rock magnetic experiments performed included the following experiments: Determination of viscosity parameter, anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS), thermomagnetic magnetisation-versus-temperature and susceptibility-versus-temperature curves, isothermal remanent magnetisation (IRM) acquisition curves and hysteresis and backfield curves measured both before and after heating. Paleomagnetic experiments included both thermal and alternating field demagnetisation experiments. Variable rock-magnetic and paleomagnetic characteristics have been observed along the flow. Paleointensity experiments performed with the Thellier-type, multispecimen and Tsunakawa-Shaw methods are underway.
