Abstract: The Iberoatlantic region (covering mainly Spain, Portugal and west coast of Africa) is a focus of a large variety of geodynamic processes. The meeting of three tectonic plates in the region (triple junction in Azores Islands) causes vulnerabilities and common scientific interest to all the countries in the area. Geodesy is the tool necessary for the monitoring of these effects.
The RAEGE project, developed between the National Geographic Institute of Spain and the Azores Regional Government, is an example of the need of international geodetic collaboration in the area. RAEGE project aims at constructing, installing, and operating four Geodetic Core Sites, two in Spain (in Yebes and Gran Canaria) and two in Azores (in Flores and Santa Maria islands) for geodetic and geodynamic purposes.
This project, together with research collaborations with the University of Alicante, opened a way for international cooperation between Spain and Portugal and showed the enriching and useful that these cooperation are. Here arise the idea of creating a new GGOS affiliate in the region, initially between Spain and Portugal. This group will be a forum for dialogue between organization and groups involved in geodesy, and it will impulse researchs in geodesy and it will settle a way of bringing geodesy closer to the society.
The first steps for the proposal to the national geodetic authorities, advances and goals of the group will be presented in this contribution.
