 Abstract: The orientation of ice crystals within large ice masses has a strong influence on its mechanical properties. How susceptible an ice crystal is to deformation is highly dependent on the orientation of the applied stress relative to the crystal's basal plane. Under sustained deformation, the crystals start to reconfigure into a preferred orientation fabric that can soften or stiffen ice considerably. Because ice is a uniaxial birefringent material and its optical axis is normal to the basal plane, the electromagnetic and mechanical properties of ice are closely related. Polarimetric radar measurements can therefore be very valuable for our understanding of the evolution of ice sheets. The Northeast Greenland Ice Stream (NEGIS) is a very distinct feature of the Greenland ice sheet with high flow velocities (~50 m/yr) far inland. The flow configuration of the ice stream is expected to create strong horizontal anisotropy of the bulk crystal orientation, which is observed in the ice core from The East Greenland Ice-Core Project located within NEGIS. With polarimetric radar measurements, we wish to extend the knowledge from the deep ice core across a larger area of the ice stream. Here we will present the results from our 2022 field campaign, where we collected continuous polarimetric measurements in and around NEGIS using a surface based radar system. These results are consistent with observations from the ice core, indicating a girdle in the middle of NEGIS and indications of a horizontal single maximum near the margins.
