 Abstract: The total and spectral solar irradiance (TSI and SSI, respectively) is the dominant energy source to the Earth and is therefore a key variable at the intersection of many diverse Earth science applications. In 2022, the Solar Irradiance Working Group became the newest of the International Radiation Commission’s working groups. Our goal is to properly represent the magnitude and variability of the extraterrestrial TSI and SSI on multiple time scales for diverse Earth science applications. To meet this goal, we have three focus areas: 1) specify and understand solar irradiance variability using measurements and models, 2) seek broad engagement with the atmospheric science community and define application-specific solar irradiance requirements to identify knowledge gaps or measurement needs, and 3) communicate recommendations to national and international scientific organizations and to the research community.In this presentation, we summarize recent progress in solar irradiance science. This progress spans new measurement capabilities, new data records and composite record development, solar irradiance variability model improvements in estimating present and past solar forcing, and more. Along the way, we highlight some important the synergistic activities underway by several national and international groups such as the NASA Solar Irradiance Science Team, the Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics (SCOSTEP), and the working group preparing the solar forcing dataset for the 7th Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP).
