Zusammenfassung: Irrigation is a major human activity with a significant impact on the land surface water cycle. This study focuses on the Ebro basin (Spain), a typical Mediterranean basin with an uneven distribution of precipitation and diverse landscapes. It has a vast network of dams and canals to manage its water resources, with 92% of total water consumption dedicated to irrigation and farming. Firstly, this work presents the LIAISE-Ebro-Irrig-Sim (LE-IS) data, which provides meteorological and physiographical data at 1 km to simulate irrigation over the Ebro basin. Namely, SAFRAN meteorological forcing, vegetation classes, actual irrigated areas and irrigation methods per area. These have been developed using information provided by farmers to the Spanish administration, about crops and areas prepared for irrigation. Secondly, the SURFEX v9 land surface model, which includes an irrigation scheme, has been used with the LE-IS data in order to assess the impacts of irrigation at larger scales. To test the impacts of different irrigation strategies, simulations considering different irrigation scenarios were performed. In order to try to evaluate the impacts of actual irrigation, remote sensed irrigation products (from the IRRIGATION+ project funded by the ESA) were provided to SURFEX as part of the precipitation forcing. These were computed employing different techniques (data assimilation, SM-based DELTA algorithm, SM-based inversion algorithm, and the Hydrological Similar Pixels (HSP) algorithm). Both sets of simulations were compared to analyse the impact of irrigation on the hydrological cycle, as well as the performance of models and remote sensing to characterise irrigation.
