Abstract:
The Cilegon industrial area is located on the coast of the Sunda Strait in Banten, Indonesia. There are several national industries in this area including the steel industry, oil and gas, chemicals, and others. Based on the comprehensive study by the National Center for Earthquake Studies, the Sunda Strait has the potential for earthquakes with a magnitude of 8.7 due to subduction activity in the south of Java. This earthquake can generate a significant tsunami, which can have a severe impact to the industrial area. Due to the fact that the impacts can be very significant, increasing knowledge about the generation, propagation, and inundation of these events is needed. A study related to the tsunami hazard map in this area is necessary. Based on the tsunami hazard map, we identify there are at least 9 companies of chemical, electricity, and cement, are potentially inundated with the flow depth more than 0.5 m. The maximum flow depth is estimated approximatelly 8.28 m in the Port of Merak. The distance of the maximum inundation could be 1.5 m inland. The estimation of tsunami arrival time is more than 70 minutes. The result of tsunami hazard should be consider to determine appropriate tsunami mitigation strategies in the Cilegon industrial area that have the potential to suffer from the event. The appropriate tsunami mitigation strategies can be beneficial in reducing casualties and risks arising from a tsunami caused by the M 8.7 South Java subduction earthquake. Keywords: Cilegon, Industrial Area, South Java, Subduction, tsunami Hazard
