 Abstract: A NASA-funded Solar Irradiance Science Team is reconstructing the historical total solar irradiance (TSI) based on the recently updated Sunspot Index and Long-term Solar Observations (SILSO) sunspot-record time series. This effort, needed for Earth climate-change studies, includes three primary components: Improve the sunspot-number records by including vetted measurement contributions from over a thousand observers spanning the last 400 years and applying new algorithmic methods to evaluate and combine those records into a sunspot-record composite. Simulate the historical solar-surface magnetic activity to match those updated sunspot records using the Advective Flux Transport (AFT) model, providing the primary sunspot- and facular-flux inputs needed for TSI reconstruction models. Update the “Community-Consensus TSI Composite” using the latest spacecraft measurements, linking the historical TSI reconstructions to this modern four-decade-long composite. The latest SILSO data were updated in 2015 by an international team using many newly discovered observational records and thorough evaluations of all records. This effort resulted in significant changes from prior such series and thus required reevaluations of all historical reconstructions based on the sunspot record. The AFT simulates the time evolution of the solar-surface flux to give solar-cycle peak dipole amplitudes and durations consistent with the sunspot record. Continuous magnetic-flux maps have been computed from 1750 to the present, giving realistic sunspot- and facular-area inputs needed for the NRLTSI reconstruction model to provide a new historical TSI reconstruction based on the updated SILSO records and these consistent flux-transport model results. We present the methodology used in this reconstruction and the latest TSI series based on this study.
