Due to the improvement in the resolution of the model grids, phenomena that were typically fully parameterized are now being partially resolved (so called grey zone). This leads to the necessity of developing parameterizations that are scale-aware. For this new kind of parameterizations, information about the earliest stages of convection is necessary. To help improve such parameterizations, in the current study we analyze large-eddy simulations for the 30.08.2016, coinciding with the ARM site in the Southern Great Planes. Using as a starting point a tracking algorithm from the literature, we track thermals, i.e., structures of rising warm air considered to be the smallest unit of convection. The aim of this study is to present an analysis of thermal characteristics: lifetime, size, reached altitude, etc. to help solve questions regarding their clustering, organization and development.
