Abstract
The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is developing a Unified Forecast System (UFS) that will be used as the next US operational weather forecast system. To advance the ability to make meaningful forecasts of the Arctic system, a single column model forced by observations taking during the MOSAiC campaign has been designed. This model is being used to test and improve microphysics and boundary layer processes unique to the Arctic, such as, the phase partitioning of cloud liquid and ice in Arctic mixed-phase clouds and their interaction with the surface layer, strongly stably stratified boundary layers, lower-level jets, and cloud-top humidity inversions. Evaluation of model studies with different physics suites under consideration for the UFS using observations taken during the MOSAiC campaign will be presented.
