Abstract
We argue that, to physically understand the most energetic solar eruptions, obtaining quantitative and meaningful diagnostics of evolving solar active regions is equally important to modeling active regions, either in fully synthetic or in data-driven settings. We review a series of works advocating for two fundamental physical quantities to monitor, namely, magnetic energy and (relative) magnetic helicity. While there are different ways to monitor the evolution of active-region magnetic energy (particularly its electric current-driven, “free” term) and relative helicity, recent works show that (i) different but complementary methods may lead to benefits in understanding and (ii) monitoring any of the two parameters in tandem can lead to either oversimplifications of the eruption process or, plainly, to missing physics. Temporal evolution can also be intriguing when the twist parameter is involved and, in fact, we show results from a very recent study that clearly call for an increased level of sophistication in the interpretation of the eruption process, corroborating previous qualitative assessments. If understood, the effect seen could potentially lead to one of the clearest eruption precursors to date.
