 Abstract: Temporal and spatial variability of deep Near-Inertial Wave (NIW) activity is revealed for the first time from direct measurements of near-bottom currents at six different sites in the western Arctic Ocean. The deep NIW activity is found to be seasonal, more energetic in July–December than in January–June. At the southernmost site in the Northwind Abyssal Plain, the NIW energy level during the energetic NIW period (July–December) is around 10 times higher than during the calm NIW period (January–June). The NIW energy during the energetic period amounts to around one-quarter that of a mid-latitude ocean. Site-dependent thickness of the near-bottom mixed layer causes rapid vertical decay of NIW activity close to the seabed, explaining notable differences in the observations between two of the sites.
