Abstract: Hydrological models are useful tools for variety of purposes but using of these tools requires a lot of input which is not accessible in some developing countries. Afghanistan is one of the countries that suffers from the climatic extremes. The country is also in the developing phase and wants to utilize water resources for electricity and agricultural production. The main hinder for any startup is the missing of meteoritical data as an input to hydrological models. In this study different range of available satellite meteorological data is used with two hydrological models over the headwater of Afghanistan. The HEC-HMS hydrological model and Mike Hydro river basin model are used for this study. The result of the models is calibrated and verified with observed gauging stations in different climatic zones of Afghanistan. Also, the model input related to the satellite data is compared with the existing limited observed meteorological data. The result of this study will beneficial for water resources planners and managers to design hydraulic structures, plan irrigation schemes and develop adaptation measures over the Afghanistan rivers.
