 Abstract: Surface water level is an important indicator of the state of the environment, and monitoring its change is critical for understanding the impacts of climate change and human activity on rivers, lakes and reservoirs.The study focuses on the impact of new generation altimetry observations on the accuracy of water level measurements. It presents a cross-validation analysis of unfocused SAR altimetry(UF-SAR) and fully focused SAR(FF-SAR) products.Although UF-SAR processing indicates a significant improvement in the accuracy of the measurements compared to conventional altimetry (CA), FF-SAR processing offers an improved along track resolution until 0.5 m. The comparison is carried out using statistical techniques to evaluate the accuracy and precision of the measurements.The study also simulates SWOT real data in 1-day and in 21-day repeat and discusses the detection of small scale water level change over the same three types of targets In conclusion, the study investigates the use of UF-SAR and FF-SAR altimetry for monitoring river discharge and water level height changes in German rivers, lakes and reservoirs.
