 Abstract: Green Infrastructure is emerging as a prominent urban infrastructure plan that can contribute to ressolve the problems of flooding and heat island effects in cities caused by rapid climate change and concentrated urbanization over the years. In this study, four separated experimental buildings were newly built on the flatland in front of the Yeungnam University in Gyeongsan, South Korea to evaluate the effect of green roof on the radiation budget and surface energy balance. This study adopted the flux profile method to evaluate the effect of green roofs on the surface energy balance. The flux profile method assumes a logarithmic profile of potential temperature, relative humidity and also the shear velocity, which make it possible to calculate the surface energy balance based on measured temperatures, humidities and wind speeds at two points with different elevations. The results shows that the flux profile methods simulated the net radiation well compared with the observed data. Moreover, the results also show that the green roof increased the latent heat flux and reduced the sensible heat flux compared to the bare concrete roof. These results implies the potential benefit of green roof in urban areas, which can help mitigating urban heat island effects.
