Abstract
Scalar proton Overhauser magnetometers are widely used in ground magnetic exploration, magnetic observatories, repeat station survey and on space satellites. The main property of these magnetometers is the high metrological accuracy, long-term and temperature stability of measurements, which is based on world spectroscopic constants.Currently, the use of vector-scalar Overhauser magnetometers measuring both the total field intensity and components is promising, which is demonstrated using the magnetometers dIdD (GEM Systems, Canada) and POS-3 and POS-4 (QMLab, Russia). The POS-3 magnetometer measures the absolute total field F and vertical component Z. Ten years of operating experience of this magnetometer has shown long-term stability of 0.1 nT/year and up to 1 nT of absolute accuracy in the range of -30...+60 ºC. The method of horizontal rotation and a simple mathematical formula allow us to determine the correction of the misalignment of the magnetic and gravitational vertical. Monthly and yearly calibrations confirmed the stability of the magnetic system based on a Garrett solenoid with a precision titanium frame. A preliminary calibration was carried out on the state standard of the The D.I. Mendeleev All-Russian Institute for Metrology. The successful experience of application at repeat station net of the Urals is presented. The possibility of using such magnetometers for ground-based geophysical surveys and at the magnetic observatories is being considered.
