Abstract
Climate change combined with growing urbanization poses challenges from the One Health perspective. We identified and quantified some of these challenges in the case of climate impacts on public health in a large urban agglomeration (Bucharest, Romania) and in a mountain-surrounded town (Brașov, Romania). In this context, thermal-related mortality is analyzed together with thermal and snow-related hazards under climate change. In large urban agglomerations, urban heat islands can amplify the thermal impact on public health. Climate change effects on changing the characteristics of avalanches season have an impact on tourism activities in mountain areas. As for climate-sensitive infectious diseases, spillover infections from wildlife reservoirs such as those in mountain regions can also fuel local outbreaks in livestock which can be further transmitted to local populations. Our results aim at the strengthening of public health systems through disease surveillance coordinated with climate monitoring and research under One Health approach.
