Abstract
In space, collisionless plasmas often demonstrate vortex features and are frequently observed in turbulent plasma environments. The plasma downstream of the bow shock is highly turbulent and abundant in vortices from magnetohydrodynamics to particle-gyro scales. The recent MMS mission reveals vortices in the Earth's magnetosheath at an ion gyroradius scale and their significant roles in space plasma. However, vortex generation, especially on the ion-to-electron gyroradius scale, has so far been lacking. Here, we show evidence of an electron-scale vortex generated in Earth's bow shock by the anisotropic electrons with a specific energy range. We also show ion-scale vortices generated by the ion diamagnetic drift in the magnetosheath and apply a kinetic equilibrium model to reconstruct the vortex features. Our results suggest an origin of electron vortex in the collisionless shocks without developing from downstream turbulent plasma and a possible evolution of ion vortex in the magnetosheath. The results could help us better understand the plasma vortex from ion to electron scales.
