Zusammenfassung
This manual intends to describe the capability, handling and maintenance of the Paterson gas rig in detail from the prospective of users that performed numerous experiments and gained lots of experience since the 1960’s. Its purpose is not to replace the instruction manuals supplied with the various machines delivered around the world, but to enable new (and experienced) users to carry out deformation experiments and solve problems that may arise during daily use. Since currently many existing apparatuses are not in use and the remaining ‘hands-on’ operators are going to retirement at some point, we think that it is important to collect, bundle and pass on the knowledge that we gained over the time using this impressive and easy-to-use machine, which still is the state of the art deformation apparatus for performing high temperature, high pressure experiments on rocks under conditions of the Earth’s crust and uppermost mantle. This manual refers in some detailed parts of the descriptions to the two machines currently installed (2024) at GFZ Potsdam with Eurotherm controllers (type 2604) for the different actuators. For the data acquisition the hard- and software of Delphin Technology, for the later corrections and calculations the software Origin from Origin Lab are used. At other machines in other labs some details may be different.
