Abstract
Within the Dead Sea Rift Integrated Research Project (DESIRE) a helicopter-borne survey was performed over the Dead Sea Rift between Aqaba and the Dead Sea. The goal of this project was to get a unified and detailed gravimetric image of the Dead Sea Transform, trying to reveal its structure and dynamics. In order to get the best possible resolution of its gravimetric features, a helicopter-borne survey with a GT-1A gravity meter was performed in terrain following mode. The results of this survey are used to discuss the differences between helicopter and fixed wing airborne gravimetry applications. Special emphasis is laid on GPS and INS data analysis as these data sets are crucial for airborne gravimetry. Effects of rotor blades, directional antenna view angles etc. are discussed as well as the spectral analysis of vibration and acceleration effects from INS data sets. Finally, general perspectives of helicopter and fixed wing applications in geodesy and geophysics are reviewed.
